The Stanford-California State Library Institute on 21st Century Librarianship was founded in 1999 in partnership by Stanford University Libraries and the California State Library. The major funding for the Institute has been provided since its inception by the California State Library with Library Services and Technology Act funds.
The major undertaking of the Institute is an annual week-long residential Summer Institute, held on the Stanford campus, for a select group of library staff who are the emerging leaders in the profession.
Additional professional development opportunities are offered on topical issues of interest to the profession, both within California and nationally via distance education opportunities. The Institute also partners with other libraries and library organizations in exploring new leadership and technology opportunities through its assistance and participation with outside projects.
