The Stanford-California State Library Institute on 21st Century Librarianship was founded in 1999 in partnership by Stanford University Libraries and the California State Library. The idea for the Institute grew from conversations between Dr. Kevin Starr, State Librarian of California and Mike Keller, Stanford University Librarian and from their desires to help shape the future of libraries and advance the state of the profession. Through the Institute, Stanford and the California State Library are embarked on a course to offer libraries of all types a vision of how better to serve library patrons and how to approach the revolution in delivery of information that is already upon the library world. In so doing, the motive is to shape a better information environment for citizens and scholars.

The major funding for the Institute has been provided since its inception by the California State Library with Library Services and Technology Act funds.

The goals of the Institute are to:
  1. Provide information and training to working library staff that will give them tools, particularly in areas of information technology, to elevate the quality of services libraries and related bodies provide to information users in the 21st century.
  2. Elevate the quality of services libraries and related bodies provide to information users in the 21st century through development of library leaders and managers, particularly in areas of planning for technological change.
The major undertaking of the Institute is an annual week-long residential Summer Institute, held on the Stanford campus, for a select group of library staff who are the emerging leaders in the profession. Additional professional development opportunities are offered on topical issues of interest to the profession, both within California and nationally via distance education opportunities. The Institute also partners with other libraries and library organizations in exploring new leadership and technology opportunities through its assistance and participation with outside projects.

Since 1999 the Institute has provided a broad series of professional development opportunities for library staff, including:
