PAYMENT By now all of you should have received an invoice for your fees for the Institute. You will have a choice of paying by check or credit card. Complete information on payment options will be included with the invoice. Payment in full must be in our hands no later than Friday, July 13. If we have not received your payment by that time your registration in the Institute will be cancelled. However, we would prefer that payment be completed as soon as possible to confirm your spot this summer. If you have any questions about your invoice, please contact Elizabeth Blackman at 650.736.2382 or eblkman@sulmail.stanford.edu. LISTSERV You have been added to the participant listserv which will serve as the primary vehicle of communication with all participants this summer. All participants are on the listserv, as well as members of the Institute Advisory Group and Institute staff. It is a closed listserv and only members are allowed to post to it. If you have an alternate or additional email address that you would like to have added to the listserv - particularly if it is one that you will be using over the summer - please send it to us and we will add it. Over the next three months you can expect to hear from us weekly with information about the summer program, including travel and lodging logistics, program content information and just interesting ideas and articles. Please feel free to use the listserv to ask questions about the Institute and communicate with your fellow participants. The address for posting to the listserv is: institute21-conference2001@lists.stanford.edu Please feel free to use the listserv to exchange, ideas, comments, questions and to get to know each other before you arrive on campus this summer. Friday evening we will have a closing reception and dinner. On Saturday we will have programs from 8:30 to noon, followed by lunch and then check out of your rooms by 2 p.m. Specific details on the programs and speakers for each day will be on this page later this month. If you have more questions in the meantime, please let me know or post them to the listserv. TRANSPORTATION On Campus: A link to the Marguerite (Stanford's free shuttle that travels around campus and to neighboring communities) is located at:
http://www-facilities.stanford.edu/transportation/marginfo.html# To Stanford Park Hotel: For those speakers who are staying at the Stanford Park Hotel, the hotel website (with driving directions) can be found at: http://www.woodsidehotels.com/wlodging/sph.html To Campus: All transportation to campus and costs related to such are the individual responsibility of each participant. You should plan on arriving on Sunday, August 5 for check in to your room at the Governor's Corner dorm complex between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. You will need to be checked out of your rooms on Saturday, August 11, no later than 2 p.m. A general campus map is located at: http://www.stanford.edu/home/map/search_map.html Driving directions to Governors Corner (where you will be staying) can be found here. For those of you who will be flying in, the closest airports are San Francisco and San Jose. Information on airport transportation from those airports is located at: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/scs/area/transportation.html#sfo If you want to take the train, check http://www.transitinfo.org/Airports/ for shuttle-to-train options. The train stop to take is Palo Alto Station. Unfortunately, the campus shuttle Marguerite does not stop at the train stations on weekends during the summer. Taxicabs can be called from the train station:
Taxicab phones If you are taking a shuttle or cab to campus have them drop you at the Governor's Corner dorm complex on Santa Theresa Street. Some of you have wondered if there are other participants in their general geographic area who might be interested in driving to campus with them. Please go ahead and post this type of query to the listserv -- you may well be able to find a driving partner this way. SATURDAY NIGHT STAYOVER Some of you have asked if it would be possible to stay at Stanford either the night before the program begins -- Saturday, August 4 -- or after it ends -- Saturday, August 11. Rooms will be available those nights for an additional charge of $60 per room per night, payable in advance. Rooms will not be available other than these two nights. You should have indicated whether you will need a room for either of those nights on the online options form. Invoices will be sent out within the week for charges for early and late arrivals. Payment should be received before the start of the Institute. For those participants who are arriving early on Saturday, August 4, check-in will be at the Elliott Program Center Residence Office immediately adjacent to the Governor's Corner complex. Early arrivals should go to the Elliott Program Center Residence Office to receive the key to the room. They should then check in again on Sunday afternoon to receive the Institute notebook and name badge. The dining hall will not be open for early arrivals so you will be on your own for meals. However, there are dining options within walking distance on campus, including Tressider Union. If you have a car, there are lots of wonderful dining options in downtown Palo Alto and the surrounding communities. PARKING A parking permit will be provided at no cost to participants who will be driving a vehicle to campus. For those of you who will be bringing cars to campus, parking is immediately adjacent to the dorm complex and at check in you will receive your parking sticker for the week. A general campus map is located at: http://www.stanford.edu/home/map/search_map.html Driving directions to campus from within the general Bay Area are located at: http://www.stanford.edu/home/visitors/directions.html A map of the Governor's Corner dorm complex is located at: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/scs/area/mapGovcoCO.html You will not need to drive your car during the week for the Institute sessions; parking is very limited in central campus and your parking permit is only good for the dorm area. Dorms Accommodations for all participants will be in the Governor's Corner dorm complex in the Sterling Quad area and are included in the Institute fee. A map of the complex is available at: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/scs/area/mapGovcoCO.html All participants will have single rooms with full housekeeping services daily. Shared bathroom facilities are available on each floor of the buildings. There are no elevators in the buildings so come prepared to climb stairs. Porters will be available to help with luggage on arrival and departure days. General information relative to summer conferences on the Stanford campus is available at: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/scs/area/campus.html Included is information on recreational facilities, campus tours, campus transportation, religious services, library privileges, etc. BAY AREA INFORMATION General information on activities in Palo Alto, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area is available at: http://www.stanford.edu/home/visitors/environs.html If you're planning on staying in the Bay Area or California before or after the Institute please feel free to ask for advice on the listserv -- many of the participants are longtime residents of the area and the state. WEATHER & DRESS What will Stanford be like in August? -- gorgeous! Expect the days to be warm and sunny -- generally in the 80s, some days a bit higher. The mornings may start out cooler with a bit of fog and the evenings can also be cooler. Stanford dress is casual -- this is not a full dress blues opportunity. Plan on wearing shorts or slacks -- whatever you will be comfortable in. Plan on doing a lot of walking on campus so bring comfortable shoes. If you choose, at our closing dinner on Friday you can sport your best, but most importantly, be comfortable.
NO SMOKING This is California where we take no smoking seriously. All indoor spaces, including all dorms and dorm rooms, are non-smoking. For those of you who are smokers, you will need to confine it to the outdoors. GUESTS Some of you have asked if a spouse, partner, or child can accompany you and share your dorm room with you. The Institute will have full daily schedules running into the evenings so you should not plan on having lots of free time. All Institute activities are only open to Institute participants, not accompanying spouses, etc. That said, if you are interested in having someone accompany you and share your room, the cost for accommodations would be $240 for the full week or $40 per night. Meal tickets would be available for some but not all meals, priced as follows:
Room charges would need to paid in advance and meal tickets could be purchased on site using only cash. Later this month when you will be asked to complete an online options form, you can indicate whether you would like to share a room with someone accompanying you to the Institute. EVENING ACTIVITIES Some of you have been asking about evening activities in order to plan your schedule. We've got of good things planned for the entire week which you won't want to miss in the evenings including -- Sunday: Opening Reception and Dinner Monday: Enjoy one of Silicon Valley's new highlights, The Tech Museum in San Jose. Thanks to the generosity of Sun Microsystems, we will have a private reception, tour and dinner at The Tech in San Jose, home to intriguing exhibits and cutting edge ideas. Tuesday and Thursday: Relax and enjoy the campus after dinner or join some optional evening classes Wednesday: Enjoy jazz? Then you're in for a treat. Tonight will feature a special dinner in the New Guinea Sculpture Garden on campus and then an evening at the Stanford Jazz Festival featuring the world class Jeff Clayton Group. Friday: Gala Closing Reception and Dinner CHECK-IN Check in will be at the Governor's Corner dorm complex on Santa Theresa St. starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 5. Look for the Institute signs when you arrive on campus to find your way to Santa Theresa St. immediately off Campus Drive West. You need to be checked in no later than 5 p.m. At check in you will receive the key to your room, along with your Institute notebook and name badge. Coin-operated washing/drying machines are available in all dorms, as well as refrigerators. Hairdryers, ironing boards and irons are not supplied.
