Barbara Alesandrini

Barbara Alesandrini I am currently branch manager of North Branch Library of the Berkeley Public Library system. Open 60 hours a week (as are all 4 Berkeley branches) -- we are the busiest of branches! With this job I am doubly blessed for this is my neighborhood branch, allowing me to work within my own community.

I have been in the profession for many, many years, attended Cal for my MLS when two modern languages were required for admission and computers filled an entire room with punch cards and we typed catalog cards on a manual typewriter! I love this computer age and the additional and expanded services that we are able to provide our patrons.

I have had the opportunity to run the entire gamut of the library world from law librarian to documents librarian to school librarian in a tri-lingual school, but I always seem to come back to the world of the public librarian. Before I was employed by Berkeley, I worked for the City of Oakland where I developed and ran the after school homework programs (PASS!) that operate in 9 branches.

In a brief interlude from the library world, I had my own handweaving and clothing design business using a skill I learned in Norway.

When my nose is not to the grindstone, I love the mountains of California -- hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and backpacking. And, we love to canoe and fish. Like so many of you, we are a travelling family having lived in Norway, Italy and the U.K. I can be ready to travel at the drop of a hat! Although I am a native Californian, as a Navy brat I lived in many different locations -- hence the travel bug!

I am looking forward to meeting all of you in August!
