Derek Anderson

Derek Anderson If two of you are baby librarians, then I must be considered in vitro!

I am the newly appointed librarian at Marin Academy, a private coeducational day school of 400 high school students located 12 miles north of San Francisco. I come to this job after 15 years in college counseling, school administration and history teaching (12 of them at Marin Academy and 3 of them at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee). When the librarianship unexpectedly came open this spring, I jumped at the chance to make a career move, for I have always seen libraries as being the centerpiece of a school's academic program, and I have always wanted to work with kids in the unique way librarians do.

I was born in San Francisco, went to Grant High School in Portland, Oregon, and then chose to attend a college on the opposite side of the country -- Bates College in Maine. This fall I will begin my MLS degree at San Jose State.

I am a passionate traveler and have been lucky enough to see and experience many different places around the world; prior to our gathering at Stanford, I will be traveling with my partner above the Arctic Circle, shooting photographs of polar bears and puffins in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. It should be quite an adventure, but as I think about the upcoming summer, I am also quite excited about meeting all of you. Until then!

(who'd of guessed there'd be two Derek's in the program!)
