Alexandra Bailey My name is Alex (Alexandra) Bailey. I'm the Branch Librarian at the Maya
Angelou Southeast Library/Biblioteca in Stockton, California. I've been with
this library system for 5 years. During the 5 years, I've also worked as an
Adult Reference Librarian at the Central Library and as an interim Branch
Librarian at a very small branch with a community of Dutch speakers. I've been
a selector of multilingual materials for our library system since I began here;
in fact the diverse community is what attracted me to this area. Our library
system has collections in nine languages other than English.I grew up in Virginia, went to university in Florida, went to library school in Indiana, then eagerly moved to the west coast of the U.S. My undergraduate degree was in Foreign Language Education, with an emphasis in Spanish and Japanese. After graduating, I spent three years teaching English (and some Spanish) at high schools in rural areas of Japan. Between Japanese teaching contracts, I traveled to Korea, Costa Rica and Venezuela. After this I lived outside of Washington DC, and worked for a government contractor who provided support services at the American Embassy in Moscow. While in library school I worked at a special library that served people with disabilities, and at the university resource center for disabilities. I feel fortunate to have this opportunity, and like others, I look forward to meeting our interesting group of folks and to learning a lot at the upcoming Institute.
