Nina Biddle My name is Nina Biddle and this is my introduction to give you an idea of
my experience in libraries and tell you where we are headed at my
library -- Minneapolis Public. I started working in libraries 20 years ago and received my MS in library science from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign in 1984. I have divided my career between cataloging and
reference, and have loved both aspects of librarianship (equally). My first
postgraduate job was at Idaho State University in Pocatello, and I have been
at the Minneapolis Public Library since 1986 -- I couldn't ask for a better
place to work: we have a rich and inspiring collection, it's rarely dull
here, and I've got phenomenal co-workers.Last November Minneapolis voters passed a referendum for a new central library. It will be built on our current site, which means we are gearing up for a move to an interim location at the end of 2002. My latest job (as of a month ago) is to implement plans for the moving and storage of our 2.6 million item collection -- definitely my most challenging assignment to date! Because we are looking forward to a new central library, we are truly focusing on the future . . . The Institute will be stimulating and extremely helpful for those of us from MPL who are attending. I am originally from Rockford, Illinois, and -- aside from Champaign (IL), Idaho and Minnesota -- have lived in Boulder, Colorado, and Columbia, Missouri -- which I mention, because I noticed from the biographies that Maxine Reneker and Dennis Wilson have lived in those places, too. In my spare time I enjoy reading (primarily U.S. history & politics, as well as biographies), gardening, hiking and vacationing on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Unlike most of you, I have not traveled extensively, and this will be my first trip to California. I am so pleased to have this outstanding professional opportunity in such a beautiful locale. I am looking forward to meeting and working with all of you. See you in August . . .
