Dave Brier Lava-filled greetings from volcanic Hawaii. My name is Dave Brier. I had
such a productive time and met so many interesting people at last year's
Institute on 21st Century Librarianship, I am returning this year as one
of the five mentors.Although I would rather spend most of my time in the ocean surfing or diving, I spend most of my day on land as a systems librarian at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Before coming to Hawaii, I worked at the University of Michigan, Temple University, Bloomfield Township Public Library, and Baldwin Public Library in Michigan. Although my mom's job as a librarian was probably instrumental in getting me comfortable with libraries, I was drawn to libraries because I needed a job where I could have super long hair by day and play rock & roll music at night. Fortunately, I'm still playing music. Last year, the Hawaiian Academy of Recording Arts presented me with an award for Best Rock Album in the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, Hawaii's version of the Grammy Music Awards. My job responsibilities include managing the Voyager library management system for 16 University of Hawaii libraries. In my spare time, I'm a Hawaii Library Association (HLA) director, HLA Newsletter co-editor, and the 2001 HLA annual conference chair. I'm an active member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. I'm also working on a masters degree in public administration. I've become increasingly interested in future studies. Last semester I took a class taught by a famous futurist, Jim Dator, who predicts that the evolution of libraries caused by the Internet will culminate in their disappearance. It will be interesting to hear your perspectives on this topic.
