Janis F. Brown

Janis Brown Like everyone else, I'm delighted to have been selected to attend the Stanford Institute and look forward to meeting everyone and sharing ideas!

I'm glad that there's a mix of baby librarians, senior citizen librarians and those in between. I rank among the older group -- could we call ourselves wise old women (or men)? I graduated from UCLA library school way back in 1975. I worked first for an information broker in Los Angeles, then for a pharmaceutical company research library in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and have been at the University of Southern California's medical library for the past 20 years, although at slightly different positions and always changing responsibilities. I'm currently the associate director for educational resources, which seems to mean that I'm responsible for everything in the library not covered by information services or technical services including such areas as a multimedia learning resources center, systems and computer support, and web stuff.

On the personal side, although I work near downtown LA, I live near Cal State Northridge, so I'm also among the valley girls of the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. I'm married and have two daughters. One daughter will be a senior at USC next year and just turned 21 yesterday. I usually feel pretty young, until she says things like, "Don't you feel old having a daughter who is 21?" My other daughter is graduating from high school this year and will be attending UC Santa Cruz in the fall. My husband of nearly 28 years has a job assisting mentally disabled people to work in mainstream jobs. We've always had lots of pets, currently we just have a wild and crazy dog, a cat, and a hamster. You'll be able to spot me, as I'll be the one covered in pet fur! But don't go looking for some one that looks like a Brown.

Look forward to seeing you at Stanford!
