Javier Corredor I work for the Sacramento Public Library as a Regional Program Manager. I've
been in this position for 10 months and enjoy my job a lot. I run five branches
in the Sacramento area; two of those branches belong to the city of Sacramento,
and three to Sacramento County. These branches employ over thirty employees and
provide programs for residents in the area immediately north of the City of
Sacramento and north east of Sacramento County. Before coming to Sacramento, I was employeed by Arlington County, Virginia, as a Librarian Supervisor. Arlington County is situated next to Washington D.C. While in Arlington -- 11 years -- I did a lot of work with the different communities living in there. I was heavily involved in the design of services for the multicultural community that lives in the county, which include people from all over the world. In Arlington alone, more than 100 languages are spoken. This is based on information obtained from the Arlington School District which register school children from all corners of the world. I received my library degree from the University of Illinois back in 1985. I also have a Master in Spanish Literature, with course work torwards the PhD in Literature, also from the University of Illinois. Initially, I thought I was going to follow the academic life and that I would be a language college professor; however, I followed a different path, and I am now working in the Library field. Originally, I am from Colombia, South America and have been living in this county since 1970. While in Colombia I worked for an advertising agency as a designer and began studying architecture, which I never finished. This background has been quite useful in my present career in assisting with space planning and design in libraries. I do enjoy painting and have explore several media such as pastels, acrylics, temperas and oils. I have been married twice: first to an American girl who was very dear, and then to a Colombian girl whom I love very much. From my first marriage I have a 27 year old kid who is now on his own and trying to finish a Masters degree in biology. From my second marriage I have child who is two and whom I love and enjoy a lot. He is quite a busy kid who wants to have books and cars. So, what can I say. I've got my hands full . . . and I still have to educate a kid. I am still looking forward to doing a lot of things in this country regarding work with the many groups that come to the USA. Libraries in this country have many resources resources which are not familiar to those coming from abroad who need to know about what is available so that they can benefit and be a part of this society. I am looking forward to meeting each one of you at Stanford. We'll see you in August.
