Lynne Cutler Hello everyone. (I had no idea there would be people from outside
California.) It's been fun reading all the bios. My name is Lynne
Cutler. I moved out to Berkeley in 1981 from upstate New York for
library school at UCB. Before that I lived 5 years in Europe,
including a time in Barcelona where I learnt Catalan. I'm glad I went to
library school so long ago, because I could take classes on hand
printing and history of the book -- not too many computer classes. (At UCB, I
audited 24 classes of my passions -- languages, film, medieval
art.) I worked as a student at Bancroft Rare Books and Western
Americana library on campus.I've now been 5 years full-time at Oakland Public Library, as a reference librarian in the History & Literature department, and a day a week in the local history room. I've grown into my position here and have created a job I really love -- very diverse. I am also the Disability Services Advocate for the library, which has involved getting grants for adaptive technology, setting up "Extended Services for Patrons with Disabilities," which has about 300 people signed up, doing outreach. I co-founded a group called BADSL, Bay Area Disability Services Librarians, and we meet quarterly, with members from many libraries and also from the disability field. Got awarded the City of Oakland "Employee of the Year" last November, which was a wonderful surprise. I am hoping the disability part of my job will be added to my job description, allowing me more time for it soon. I have a lot of goals, including setting up home delivery service. I also buy the literature, set up writers' events, and am on (too many!) committees, including one where I am co-chair for the LGBT Materials & Services Committee. I'm also on the board of the Berkeley Historical Society.
