Belen Fernandez I had the honor last year of participating in the first year of the Institute and proceeded to return to Columbus, Ohio, ready to take risks and be a leader. I created a day of learning for Columbus Metropolitan Library staff to explore the ideas of change and risk-taking. The day was a huge success, largely in part to the enthusiastic participation of Mike Keller as our key note speaker. The Summer Institute opened my eyes to a new way at looking at myself and my organization. It made risk taking look so appealing! I have spent most of my time since I returned from Stanford working for change in areas in which I have responsibility. Surprisingly, these changes are being approved. I have been with the Columbus Metropolitan Library system since 1987 and have been the Head of Reference for my facility since 1990. I develop training and present reference and source training for the entire system of locations. This is in conjunction with providing reference service and collection development for both book and online products. I was delighted to be selected as an intern and can't wait to return to an atmosphere where ideas are valued and instigating change is encouraged. I look forward to meeting with the new participants to answer questions. Get ready for a professional and intellectual awakening!
See you all soon.
