This workshop will share processes and case studies for making partnerships viable and rewarding. During the session, we will discuss:
- Essential rules of partnering with multiple constituencies;
- Tools, data gathering and implementation plans for establishing a unified community vision
- "The Tipping Point" for libraries and how every community is poised to spread the library virus
- Common hurdles, important concessions and how to avoid common mistakes
- Framing the message: How detailed and literal librarians communicate with a bumper sticker world, manage expectations and have the media work on your library's behalf
- Creating social contracts between private supporters and governmental entities to level success
- The importance of benchmarking success, acknowledging shortcomings and always creating victories

JJ Baskin is a strategic consultant to businesses and non-profit corporations. A resident of Austin, Texas, he has worked most recently for Earful of Books, the nation's largest audiobook retailer, and iluvcamp, an application service provider created for the summer camp industry. Mr. Baskin specializes in brand creation and management, public relations and strategic planning. Past non-profit consulting efforts have included Keep Texas Beautiful, JBS Leadership Forum, STARDATE and the McDonald Observatory where he has provided outreach and management advice.
A community volunteer for more than 20 years, JJ Baskin has spent the past five years active with the Austin Public Library Foundation, serving as President for the past 30 months. The Library Foundation has raised over $1 million dollars in its young six-year history, which has included innovative partnerships like The Michael and Susan Dell Wired for Youth Computer Centers with the Austin Public Library and the City of Austin.
He has served as a member of the steering committee for the City of Austin Mayor's Libraries for the Future Task Force, a comprehensive community study and visioning process for the library. Most recently, he was appointed to the Texas State Libraries & Archives TEX-SHARE Advisory Board. He has been an advisor to numerous library foundations, community support organizations, and national library groups. Mr. Baskin also serves as a member of the Friends of the Public Library, and the Austin Children's Museum.
Mr. Baskin received his BA from Trinity University in San Antonio and his Masters of Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT-Austin.
