List of core competencies; "Core Competencies: What They Are and How to Use Them," Richard Naylor, Public Libraries, March/April 2000
This workshop will take a mini-MBA approach to addressing the following question: what are the essential core competencies for libraries in the 21st century? The desired outcome is for participants to become familiar with two useful non-profit management frameworks and to engage in a provocative discussion about what activities are truly important for libraries, and what they are uniquely positioned to offer.
The workshop will start with a large group discussion about the environment within which libraries operate and will move to a discussion of the competencies of librarianship. The first discussion will work establish the competitive environment of libraries. Using a model from Sharon Oster's book on Strategic Management for Non-Profit Organizations, participants will collectively map the key forces shaping today's information management landscape.
The second exercise on core competencies derives from CK Prahalad and Gary Hamel's classic Harvard Business Review article on the "Core Competencies of the Corporation". After a brief discussion of defining core competencies (vs. vision, or key tasks), participants will react to a draft list of Competencies for California Librarians in the 21st century and will try to distill the four to six essential competencies for libraries in the 21st century (out of a list of 50).
The workshop will then move into smaller groups broken down by library types (e.g. public-large, public-small, academic, school) to map those competencies against the business process of their specific libraries. Each small group will report their discussions so all participants can compare and contrast the relative importance of different competencies in different library environments.
